Training

Fees

"Look at your student as you now look at your teacher. Ask yourself what your student expects from you. If you teach with this in mind, then you will become a good teacher. When you teach always try to discover the good points in your student, what you don't have yourself. If you don't know how to do that you can't progress". - Gozo Shioda.

Student applying Nikajo shoulder lock to MJAll members of the Ojirowashi dojo will be covered by a student accident insurance plan and no student will be allowed to train if their insurance cover is not current. Unfortunately spectators are not covered by our insurance policy. Training fees must be paid before the start of each class. New students are entitled to one free training session. A training session goes for two hours and includes a five minute break.

Currently the IYAF does not require an annual registration fee so at the moment there are no membership or registration fees.

The above fees are correct as at January 23, 2007.

Gradings

Gradings are available for students who meet the minimum testing requirements. Grading fees are separate and only apply to students who wish to be graded and receive formal qualifications, see your instructor for more details. Genuine Kyu Certificates issued by the IYAF will be presented by the registered instructor to students who pass their grading. All black-belt qualifications will be issued direct from the Yoshinkan. Students are expected to be registered with the Yoshinkan Honbu from 3rd Kyu upwards.

Instructors

All instruction is carried out by a qualified aikido instructor. It is essential for the general safety of everyone that students obey the commands of the senior instructor at all times. Mary-Joan Bradley Sensei (3rd dan) is your instructor and holds an instructor's certificate from the IYAF in Japan as well as National Coaching Accreditation - Australian Coaching Council Inc. - Coaching Level 2.

Membership

"The aim of Aikido is to develop the truly human self. It should not be used to display ego." (Ueshiba K., P.85, 1987)

"...The founder set up strict precautions to prevent the misuse of Aiki and would accept as new students, only those whose character was vouched for." (Ueshiba K., P.157, 1985)

Membership to the Ojirowashi dojo is open to men and women of good character, who have a keen attitude and commitment.

Prospective members may be asked to provide two character referees as a condition of entry into the dojo and may also be interviewed personally. The directors of the Ojirowashi dojo believe that the teaching of Aiki techniques to hoodlums was not the intention of the founder, Morihei Ueshiba.

Membership is automatic once the student begins training and there are no joining fees.

Student conduct

"Always think about the other person, your partner. What is he thinking? What does he want? Develop the kind of telepathy that is at the origin of wa, the harmony of aikido. Accomodate without destroying or losing yourself, adjust yourself to your partner". - Gozo Shioda.

Eddie Wong Sensei demonstrating sankjo technique on AlbertStudents are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at all times, and observe the acceptable dojo etiquette. Aikido is not competitive so please strive to look after your partner during training.

It takes time to build the sort of trust required to execute some of the more dangerous techniques, any "bullying" will not be tolerated and may result in a student's expulsion from the dojo.

Uniform

The basic aikido uniform is a 14 oz white dogi supplied by most martial art shops. New students do not need to buy a dogi straight away. Loose fitting track suit pants and a white T-shirt are ok. The hakama is worn by black-belts and instructors only.

Syllabus

The syllabus is based on the IYAF curriculum and is very structured. Students will need to be dedicated and build the discipline necessary to learn the large number of techniques expected to gain their shodan (1st dan) or black belt qualification. The testing of student's knowledge can range from as low as ten movements at 10th Kyu level to over 230 different techniques at Shodan level. A copy of the syllabus is available by downloading a suitable format below.
